Most people know their home needs to be cleaned. The question nobody agrees on is: how often?

Ask ten different people and you’ll get ten different answers. Some swear by a full clean every weekend. Others do a little each day. Some wait until things get bad enough to motivate action. The truth is, different areas of your home have different needs — and cleaning everything on the same schedule either leaves some rooms neglected or has you working harder than necessary.

Here’s a practical, room-by-room breakdown of how often each area of your home should be cleaned, and why.

Kitchen: Daily Wipe-Downs, Weekly Deep Clean

The kitchen is the hardest-working room in your home, and it shows. Food prep, cooking, and family gatherings mean bacteria, grease, and crumbs accumulate fast. A few things should happen every single day: wiping down counters, cleaning the stovetop after cooking, and not letting dishes pile up in the sink. These small habits make a big difference.

Beyond the daily basics, your kitchen needs a more thorough clean once a week. That means scrubbing the sink, cleaning the microwave inside and out, wiping down cabinet fronts, and mopping the floor. Once a month, go deeper — clean inside the refrigerator, degrease the oven, and wipe down the tops of appliances.

The areas most people forget? The range hood filter, the inside of the dishwasher, and the seal around the refrigerator door. These collect grime over time and, if ignored long enough, can affect both hygiene and appliance performance.

Bathrooms: Weekly, With Daily Touch-Ups

Bathrooms are one of the most germ-prone areas of any home, which makes consistent cleaning essential. Ideally, toilets should be wiped down and disinfected at least once a week. The same goes for the sink and faucet handles, which are touched constantly throughout the day.

Showers and tubs need a thorough scrub at least weekly — more often if you have multiple people using them. Soap scum and mildew build quickly in warm, damp environments, and the longer you wait, the harder they are to remove.

A quick daily habit that goes a long way: a squeegee on shower walls after each use. It takes thirty seconds and dramatically slows down soap scum and mold buildup between cleanings.

Grout, tile, and bathroom floors should get proper attention at least every two weeks. These surfaces look clean from a distance but harbor bacteria and mildew in ways that aren’t always visible to the naked eye.

Living Room: Weekly Vacuuming, Monthly Deep Cleaning

Your living room sees a lot of traffic but doesn’t accumulate the same kind of mess as kitchens and bathrooms. Still, it needs regular attention. Vacuuming or sweeping once a week keeps dust and pet hair from building up in carpets and on upholstery. Dusting surfaces — shelves, coffee tables, entertainment units — should happen at least every one to two weeks.

Once a month, go a level deeper. Vacuum under and behind furniture, dust ceiling fans and light fixtures, clean baseboards, and wipe down window sills. These are the areas that rarely get attention during quick weekly cleans but quietly collect dust that affects your home’s air quality over time.

If you have pets or young children, you may need to bump up your vacuum schedule to every two or three days.

Bedrooms: Weekly Bedding, Bi-Weekly Dusting

Clean sheets matter more than most people realize. Bedding should be washed once a week — pillowcases especially, since they’re in direct contact with your face and hair for hours each night. Mattress covers and duvet inserts can go every two to four weeks.

Dusting surfaces, vacuuming the floor, and wiping down nightstands should happen every one to two weeks. Don’t forget the areas you can’t easily see: under the bed, the top of the wardrobe, and ceiling fan blades. These collect dust quickly and can trigger allergies if left unchecked.

Closets and storage areas can be done monthly or seasonally — focus on wiping down shelves and clearing out anything that doesn’t belong.

Laundry Room and Utility Spaces: Monthly

These rooms are often forgotten entirely, which is understandable — they’re functional spaces, not showpieces. But they still need regular attention. Wipe down the washer and dryer monthly, clean out the lint trap after every use, and periodically run a cleaning cycle through your washing machine to prevent mildew and odor buildup. Check behind and under appliances every few months.

Keeping up with all of this consistently is a lot to ask of anyone with a full life. Most households are managing work schedules, kids, aging parents, social commitments, and a hundred other things. The cleaning schedule above is the ideal — and ideals are hard to maintain on your own.
